Die Hard Released July, 1988

his 1988 classic redefined both the action movie and the action star, creating the formula "terrorists take over a [blank] and a lone hero must go up against them." Bruce Willis made a name for himself on the action hero scene with this first and best entry in the Die Hard franchise. From start to finish, Willis' John McClane was a total bad ass, killing his way to the top of Nakatomi Plaza without even the benefit of shoes. Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber is the action movie villain every other action movie wish they had, a character just as memorable as the hero he matched wits with. Masterfully directed by John McTiernan, Die Hard is the perfect action movie, with great set-pieces, humor, character development, a brilliant and nasty bad guy, and a plot that actually makes you care about the characters. Yippee-ki-yay indeed!
